 Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

  • MLD is a manual therapy technique that affects primarily superficial lymphatic circulation.

  • MLD provides a stretch to the skin that enhances lymph capillary activity.

Effects of MLD:

    • Increase the frequency of lymphangion contractions

    • Improve lymph transport capacity

    • Redirect lymph flow toward collateral vessels, anastomoses, uninvolved lymph region

    • Mobilize excessive lymph fluid.


Indication of MLD:

    • Lymphedema

    • Edema from chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

    • Sports injury

    • Neurological injury

    • Post-operative swelling


Contraindications of MLD

    • Cardiac related edema

    • Pulmonary edema

    • Renal related edema
